History:
Bhilai is situated in the state of Chhattisgarh and is also the second largest city of the state. It is one of the cities which is enriched with the cultural heritage of old dynasties and has many temples and ancient monuments around it. Due to prominent steel plant township the city is populated with mixed cultures and religious groups. It is basically and artificially created region of domicile. It has a predominant cosmopolitan culture while maintaining its cultural meritocracy.
Geography and demography:
The city of Bhilai has one of the largest integrated steel plants in India which is also known as the Bhilai Steel plant. There are mines located near the steel plant. It has 11 sectors including the community hall, health centers, schools, and market. As per the 2001 census Bhilai has a population of 553,837. But unlike most other industrial townships, Bhilai is a green and clean city.
Economy:
The city has a prospering economy due to the Bhilai steel plant. There are mines which are connected to the steel plant through rail lines. These mines are rich in iron ores, manganese and dolomite. Products made in the plant include steel products like railway sleepers, rails, construction materials and many more. There are various factories which produce chemicals, acids, and gases also. Reputed hospitals are also located in the area. The township has expanded over the past few years due to its growing economy.
Education:
Bhilai is also one of the major education centers for technology training. Three main schools of the area are Delhi Public School, Krishna public School and BSP Senior Secondary School. Apart from this the city has also produced 2 top IIT JEE toppers and many other top rankers. The two main hospitals of the region are also vital for state research work.
Culture:
Bhilai is also known as the city of 'university in diversity' and has a rich cultural heritage. Festivals are celebrated in abundance here. The city has traditional folk dance programs, multi cuisine food festivals and dances. There are songs related to child birth, marriage and other occasions also. The regional songs are also known as Goura songs. All festivals like Diwali, Holi, Navaratri, Id, Christmas, etc. are celebrated here.
Tourism:
There are lots of activities and hangouts in the city. These include Maitri Bagh Zoo & Park, colorful musical fountain, recreational parks, malls, Civic Center & Akash Ganga and the nearby Durg sector should not be missed. There are places to see in the steel plant also like the Coke oven battery, Rail & Structure Mill, Blast furnace, Plate Mill, Wire Rod Mill etc. Other places to see include Deoblalod, Tandula, Dhamda, Balod, Siya Devi, Nagpura, Kharkhara and Hajra falls.
Transportation:
The nearest railway station here is Durg, along with Bhilai-3, Bhilainagar, Bhilai Powerhouse and Kumhari. The city is well connected from the national highway 6. Nearest airport is the Bhilai airport where most flights operate via Raipur which is also the capital of the state.
